Bell Helmets Super 2 And Super 2R Preview

Bell Helmets Super 2R Preview

Racing leads to innovation... and racing can be dangerous, so at blurred we always love to see that racing has inspired an innovative approach to a new range of mountain bike helmets from industry veterans Bell Helmets.

The Bell Helmets Super 2R and Super 2 build on the original Super helmet, which was focused on trail riding, including design features such as a deeper back design to prevent injuries and inclusion of an integrated GoPro camera mount. A significant change for 2015 is that Bell are offering both helmets with a MIPS option. MIPS is the designed to prevent concussions caused by rotational movement of the head in an accident, so it's worth stretching your budget for a MIPS equipped helmet.

It's a sign of the changing times that Bell Helmets have focused the biggest updates to the Super 2R. If you are aware with the concept, it's this: In a typical enduro style race, the up-hill ride is generally challenging enough that wearing a full-face helmet causes issues (breathing and over-heating), however the descending sections are generally fast enough that riding a full-face helmet is prudent, so riders generally have to cart around a couple of helmets through-out the event.

The concept of the Bell Helmets Super 2R is to make life a bit simpler, by creating essentially a transformable helmet. For ascending the Super 2R resembles the Super 2 and shares many features, however for descent the rider attaches the lower part of the helmet, so that it resembles a tradition full-faced model. The lower part offers the additional protection for face/jaw/nose simply by clipping together with the helmet.

Importantly Bell are not making claims that the Super 2R is a replacement for an existing full-faced helmet if you are going to be riding downhill, free-ride etc, but rather it's been designed specifically for a certain style of riding and racing events. If the conditions are going to be more challenging, then use an appropriate full-faced helmet.

The Super 2R does have some weight penalty over a good composite full-face helmet, but if you looked at the combined weight of having to haul about two helmets at an event, you'll be better off running with just the Super 2R.
