Avanti Torrent S And Torrent CS 27.5 Preview

Avanti Torrent S And Torrent CS 27.5 Preview

Ahhhh another enduro bike preview… it’s almost something that could be done by an app on your smartphone, just insert manufacturers name, bike name and if they prefer to refer to wheel size as 27.5” or 650b…

It’s the curse of the ‘enduro’ branding… take a long travel (6” plus) trail bike and no longer is it acceptable to even refer to it as a trail bike, now it must be an enduro bike, to meet the need of the manufacturer and bike shop to ensure they have something punters want to buy… but as we are among friends we can be honest… these are the bikes we ride most often… the fun ones!

Designed in New Zealand the Avanti Torrent is a full suspension bike that has been continuously developed since it’s debut a few years back as a 26” model. It’s spawned a 29” version (the Coppermine) and now a dedicated 27.5” in alloy and carbon frames. The key to it’s success as a design is the Tru4 4 bar rear suspension, unique to Avanti and optimised in partnerships with RockShox and Fox Racing Shocks.

The Torrent S are the alloy framed models, that comes in two flavours, the Torrent S 7.1 with 150mm of travel provided by X-Fusion/RockShox combination and Shimano SLX/Deore drivetrain or the Torrent S 7.2 with 150mm of travel provided by Marzocchi 350cr/RockShox Monarch combination suspension, Shimano XT/SLX drivetrain and e-thirteen cranks.

Both builds are suitable for weekend rides, though the Torrent S 7.2 is set up for longer days out and much harder descents with the new 35mm legs on the Marzocchi cr forks, which blend the lightness of 34mm legs and the strength of 36mm legs, so what’s not to like. Combine with an X-fusion dropper post and you’re set really.

If you want to push yourself further though, then you’ll need to look at the Torrent CS, which combines a carbon frame with an alloy rear, matched to Fox Racing Shocks Fox 34 CTD fork and Evolution CTD rear shock… you could pick this bike up from a shop and enter an enduro race the next day without changing a thing, once you've added your pedals of choice.

The secret sauce of the Torrent range is in the engineering of the Tru4 rear suspension design, it’s solid and will keep you tracking as you blast down descents, but it’ll also keep you nimble as you climb. It’s been reviewed for the updated Torrent, now the die-cast top arms are seam welded, not just held together by the connecting bolts, which introduces a rigidity to the design unlike anything else on the market. It looks and feels bullet-proof.
