Champery Downhill World Cup 2011

This weekend the 2011 UCI Mountain Bike Championships hits Champery, Switzerland. Now the World Cup has settled, it's no longer about the sponsored teams and individual riders, it's about national teams.

I know there's a strong contingent from New Zealand from Juniors to Elite representing Cross Country, 4X Cross and Downhill and it's really Downhill I'm going to speak (type) to.

2011, has been an exciting year in World Cup, the expected dominance by the top riders and teams seem to come undone pretty early on in the piece. Instead of it becoming the Atherton show, the results have been mixed with the consistency of Aaron Gwin securing the World Cup. But what has been outstanding again this year is the performance by the New Zealand riders, consistently they have held on to 50% of the top ten finishers at every event, it's been disappointing not to see one of the lads standing on that centre podium.

Already Cross Country rider Anton Cooper has secured a silver medal medal in the Junior field.

So who could grab a key spot come Sunday in the Elite Downhill? My money for a strong finish from a New Zealand rider is potentially any of the key three on-form riders; Brook MacDonald, Cam Cole or Justin Leov… so am I sitting on the fence… fuck yeah!

Now I just have to wait until the results on Sunday!
